During times of transition or growth in our lives, times filled with what seems like constant change, it is crucial to remember that we need to remain gentle with ourselves. It’s easy to get caught up in our daily momentum and just keep going when really what we need is to slow down if we don’t want to run ourselves down. When things seem to be moving quickly, it is even more important for us to make a conscious effort to slow down and be gentle with ourselves.
It might be difficult to even see what is happening around us when we’re caught up in the whirlwind of our lives and to lose sight of the direction we really want to head in. Being gentle with ourselves doesn’t mean that we stop accomplishing things. It only means that we make a daily choice to honor ourselves and take care of the needs of our bodies and our spirit.
Certainly, this means different things to different people. For example it could mean taking a yoga class; taking a remedy, herbs, or vitamins;perhaps just getting a little extra sleep. Focusing our energy on ourselves and paying attention to our personal needs in this way helps create the space for a more positive, loving, and accepting view of ourselves and our lives. By setting an intention to do this, we will be more cognizant of our energy levels on a daily basis and more able to replenish them as needed.
The holidays are especially a time when we tend to over extend ourselves and lose sight of our personal needs. Family obligations, social engagements, and an over packed schedule can deplete our energy and quickly get us off balance. But the more we are able to listen to our inner voice and treat our bodies with gentleness, the more tenderness and compassion will will have in our lives (both for ourselves and those closest to us). Learning to understand and pay attention to what we truly need will in turn allow us to fill our lives with unlimited loving energy and to truly take care of the things that mean the most to us.
