The Yogic Way- Ancient Solutions for Modern Challenges
February 1 - March 9
An online 6 week learning experience
Over the past few decades there has been a tremendous increase in the popularity of yoga around the world. So much so that the United Nations even declared and International Yoga Day. Along with this globalization yoga has evolved and transformed in various ways, its adapted to different cultures and in some instances bears little resemblance to its Indian roots. Yoga today includes such things as New Age religion, psychology, sports science, biomedicine, and so on. And this global popularity has made it into Big Business or what we refer to as Big Yoga.
Despite this global popularity, a clear understanding of its historical contexts and the range of practices that it includes, is often seen lacking in many practitioners.
Unfortunately, most yoga teacher training courses offer an extremely limited discussion of yoga’s history, roots, and philosophy.
This online program includes an overview of the history of yogic practices along with an introduction to yoga’s ancient texts, theory, and methods that inform our modern practices.
This course will consist of lectures, practical demonstrations, and reading material.
The following questions will be addressed:
- What is yoga?
- How has the practice developed and evolved over the centuries?
- Can anyone practice?
- What is Patanjala yoga?
- What is meant by Yogic breath (pranayama) and how is it practiced?
- What is ayurvedic medicine?
